Outdoor Coaching

A different way to create space, think more clearly, and explore what’s next.

Why take coaching outdoors?

Most people try to figure out what’s next in the middle of everything else.

Between meetings. Between deadlines. At the end of a long day.

They’re thinking about big questions like career changes, leadership challenges, and what’s next, but they’re doing it in the same environment that’s already full of noise, expectations, and constant input.

Outdoor coaching offers a different way to approach those conversations by changing the environment where they happen. Stepping outside can create the space to slow down, think more openly, and see your situation from a different perspective.

What is outdoor coaching?

Outdoor coaching is exactly what it sounds like. Coaching sessions that take place outdoors instead of in an office or over a screen.

The coaching itself does not change. The questions, the structure, and the focus on your goals all remain the same.

What changes is the environment, and that shift can make it easier to slow down, think more openly, and see your situation from a different perspective.

It is not a different kind of coaching. It is a different way of creating the conditions that make coaching work.

Why it works

Environment

Stepping into a natural environment changes how we think.

Time in nature can reduce stress, restore focus, and create the space needed for reflection. Without the constant input and demands of a typical work environment, it often becomes easier to slow down, think more clearly, and see your situation more completely.

Movement

Most coaching conversations happen while sitting still.

When we are walking, our thinking often becomes less rigid and more fluid. It can be easier to process ideas, express what we are really thinking, and explore new directions.

Side-by-side conversation

Outdoor coaching changes the dynamic of the conversation.

Instead of sitting across from each other, we are often walking side by side. This can reduce pressure and make it easier to speak openly without feeling scrutinized.

Sensory experience

Being outdoors engages more of your senses in subtle ways.

What you see, hear, and experience in the moment can make insights feel more real and more connected to the conversation. Instead of staying abstract, those insights become tied to a specific place and experience.

That can make them easier to remember, revisit, and carry forward after the session is over. Many people find they can picture where they were when something clicked, which helps bring that insight back later.

When outdoor coaching is most helpful

Outdoor coaching can be especially helpful during moments of change or uncertainty.

When you are trying to figure out what’s next, make a decision without a clear path, or step into something new, the way you think about the situation matters just as much as the decision itself.

In these moments, more input does not usually create clarity. More space does.

What a session looks like

Sessions typically take place on a local trail or outdoor space.

We walk side by side, pause when needed, and move at a pace that works for you. There is no expectation to cover a certain distance or keep moving the entire time.

The focus stays on the conversation and what you need in that moment.

If it makes sense, we may use the surrounding environment as part of the conversation. Other times, it is simply a place that creates the space to think and talk more openly.

I take time in advance to choose locations that are accessible and well-suited for conversation, and I monitor weather conditions to ensure the experience is both comfortable and safe. Things like terrain, distance, and conditions are all considered ahead of time.

If being outdoors is not the right fit for a particular session, we can always meet virtually or adjust as needed.
